As a student, the greatest hurdle you may see while searching a job is not having a sufficient work experience. Usually, employer first looks at the job experience than he looks at other things. But if a student resume is written professionally that can showcase the skills and accomplishments successfully, an employer can consider these types of resumes for entry level jobs that require not more than couple of years experience.
Placement of components in a resume may differ according to the job nature and experience. But student resume should have proper placement of all the components that a resume should make him standout even among the experienced professionals. In this article, I am going to tell you the basic components and their placement in a student resume.
Basic Information – Basic information should be placed at the top of the resume and include name first than home address, phone/cell number and email id. Information like height, marital status, color etc is never recommended to put.
Objective – Make your career objective as specific as possible. It should not be longer than 2 lines. Be specific in telling your targeted position, future goals, field of interest and skills.
Educational Qualification – Put your educational qualification in reverse chronological order. Your first qualification in the last and your last qualification in the first place.
Work Experience – Again insert your work experience in reverse chronological order, if you have any during your academic career, or if you don’t have any professional experience put you volunteer/community work you have done during your education. Moreover, it is necessary that you should write some job description under every job you have done so far.
Extracurricular Activities – It is perfect to put activities you do outside of your work and educational institution. For instance, sports, music, performing art and so on. Remember to keep it simple, it is better if you put it in bullet format.
References – It is fine if you write it as “available on request”, but this section should be included in a student resume.
This is simple yet powerful format for student resume writing. Do not try to exaggerate facts, but write them in a manner that it should look and feel like written by a professional person. Ultimately, an employer will be encouraged to call you for the interview even if you don’t have enough work experience for the position.
