Basic Components of a Student Resume

December 28th, 2009

As a student, the greatest hurdle you may see while searching a job is not having a sufficient work experience. Usually, employer first looks at the job experience than he looks at other things. But if a student resume is written professionally that can showcase the skills and accomplishments successfully, an employer can consider these types of resumes for entry level jobs that require not more than couple of years experience.

Placement of components in a resume may differ according to the job nature and experience. But student resume should have proper placement of all the components that a resume should make him standout even among the experienced professionals. In this article, I am going to tell you the basic components and their placement in a student resume.

Basic Information – Basic information should be placed at the top of the resume and include name first than home address, phone/cell number and email id. Information like height, marital status, color etc is never recommended to put.

Objective – Make your career objective as specific as possible. It should not be longer than 2 lines. Be specific in telling your targeted position, future goals, field of interest and skills.

Educational Qualification – Put your educational qualification in reverse chronological order. Your first qualification in the last and your last qualification in the first place.

Work Experience – Again insert your work experience in reverse chronological order, if you have any during your academic career, or if you don’t have any professional experience put you volunteer/community work you have done during your education. Moreover, it is necessary that you should write some job description under every job you have done so far.

Extracurricular Activities – It is perfect to put activities you do outside of your work and educational institution. For instance, sports, music, performing art and so on. Remember to keep it simple, it is better if you put it in bullet format.

References – It is fine if you write it as “available on request”, but this section should be included in a student resume.

This is simple yet powerful format for student resume writing. Do not try to exaggerate facts, but write them in a manner that it should look and feel like written by a professional person. Ultimately, an employer will be encouraged to call you for the interview even if you don’t have enough work experience for the position.

Chronological, Functional or Combination: Which one is Your Resume Type?

December 25th, 2009

Ever wonder which type of resume you have for your job application. Usually, people don’t think about the type while writing a resume. They just write what they think is the best to place in a CV. But HR personals see resume writing differently. Generally, they divide resume writing into 3 categories and look for these types in every resume they receive.

First type of resume is Chronological, second one is Functional and third one is the Combination of both. You need to identify which type of resume format should match with your experience and qualification. Let’s see what each type says about itself.

  1. 1. Chronological Type

This type most suits to the professionals having several years of experience in their work field. Current work experience should be written on the top and first work experience of life should be written in the last. Chronological type emphasizes more on work experience rather than education, skills and accomplishments.

Chronological resume best works for those professionals who have been working in the same field for many years. Employer would like to see this type of resume when they want to hire an experienced professional for top management position.

  1. 2. Functional Type

Functional type focuses more on skills and accomplishments rather than chronological work history. This type best works for entry or mid level jobs, but it is also works best for career changers. Not only it works for career changer but it can also do the best for professionals who want to show their skills and accomplishments rather than their work experience like students, new professionals and so on.

  1. 3. Combination Type

When chronological and functional combine together in a resume, it creates a type called “Combination”. This type takes some elements from chronological and some from functional.  It usually starts from a short job description preceded by a set of skills and accomplishments.

Combination type combines the benefits of both the previous types and brings a new format that can work for every professional whether an experienced executive or a young professional.

Scattered, unorganized and cluttered resumes are never liked by hiring people. No matter which type of resume you select, make it clear and easy to read and understand.

The Art of Crafting a Cover Letter for your Resume

December 19th, 2009

A resume for a job without a cover letter is like a body without a heart. Potential employer would like to see a cover letter with every resume, and when she sees a cover letter that can make you shine, she will not only read it but most likely to short list you for an interview. After knowing the importance of a cover letter to go with your resume, you need to make sure that it should be as good as your resume itself.

Cover letter writing is an art. It can make or break. A great cover letter can be divided into 3 sections/ paragraphs: first one is about what is the need of writing this letter, second would be about your offer to the employer and the third and final section would be about how you will follow up with the recruiter. Let us discuss these sections in detail.

First Section: Purpose of Writing the Cover Letter

Opening of any writing should be attention grabbing, same case is with the cover letter opening paragraph. Your initial words should catch the eyes of a hiring person.  If you are responding to any advertised job, make sure to write about it in first section. Make him to understand that you are a perfect match for advertised position.

Consequently, some letters are written for potential position within an organization. If you are writing for such category, clearly state it in the first paragraph with specific job objective.

Another type of cover letter opening could be taken into the category of networking and approaching people for potential job opportunity.  Opening for this purpose should clearly state the objective of job and career.

Second Section: Your Offer to the Potential Employer

This major part of a cover letter should focus on to your offering to the potential employer. You need to sell yourself for a particular job.  Focus on your abilities, skills and accomplishments to show that how you could be a best match for available job position.

Last Section: Follow Up Closing

Close your cover letter with the opening of follow up opportunity. Show that how much you are passionate about the job position. Ask politely for an interview opportunity to further discuss your qualifications. Provide your contact information like email address and phone/cell numbers to reach you.

Conclusion

It’s not a good idea to have one cover letter for every vacancy. Perfect cover letter should be customized according to the requirements of available job position. It’s important to make a concrete first impression by crafting an excellent cover letter to support your professional resume.
